Pediatric Chiropractic Care
Just as an adult’s does, a child’s spinal column protects their central nervous system. The events early on in life can dictate their health in the future. If their central nervous system is negatively impacted, it leads to a state of “dis-ease.” Please note that this is not equated to conditions such as heart disease.
One source states that the definition of “disease” is
“…a disordered or incorrectly functioning organ, part, structure, or system of the body resulting from the effect of genetic or developmental errors, infection, poisons, nutritional deficiency or imbalance, toxicity, or unfavorable environmental factors; illness; sickness; ailment.”
Your baby may experience trauma from when they’re in utero. Their position can cause trauma in the spine as it develops. As they grow, breastfeeding difficulties, restricted head movements, misalignment of the shoulders or problems sleeping may be a result of such a trauma.
Early milestones such as holding their head up, sitting, crawling and walking lead to physical strain. Your child should be checked by a chiropractor qualified in pediatric chiropractic to detect any imbalances.
When your child grows, their life is all about exploration. Playing, falls and growing can cause misalignments in the spine. Colds, ear infections and more are signs of imbalances in the nerve pathways that prevent the immune system from working properly. A chiropractic adjustment may reduce the symptoms of conditions such as ADD/ADHD.
As your child enters their pre-teen and teen years, injuries are common. They may play sports or roughhouse with their friends and siblings. Your child may not even complain of pain. That’s why it’s important to watch for signs of an imbalance and have them checked regularly by a chiropractor.
Imbalances Lead to Disease
The above definition clearly indicates that imbalances in your body’s structures or systems are valid sources of disease. A chiropractor checks your spine for a subluxation or a misalignment of the spine that causes problems with the central nervous system. With a chiropractic adjustment, we seek to correct subluxations, so that nerve pathways are opened. This movement facilitates improvements in your rest and relaxation, digestion and immune function, which will, in turn, restore your growth, healing and development.
Tailoring Our Care
Every child will receive the care that addresses their precise needs. When we adjust a pediatric patient, we use minimal force such as a light fingertip pressure for babies. Older children can have more of a hands-on approach or we may use the Activator® instrument.
A minimal amount of force is all that is required to correct misalignments and restore the proper range of motion to a child’s spinal joints.

Making It Easy for Your Child
Some of the parents at our practice felt concerned that their child may not be able to sit through our new patient procedures. If so, we have a few steps that we can take. We’ll email you the intake forms so that you can send them back before your child’s appointment. Dr. Jill will review them. On the first visit, Mom or Dad can come in alone to discuss the situation.
Then, we’ll book a separate appointment to take scans with the INSiGHT™ Subluxation Station, which is done in just about 15 minutes. Your child can play with toys and explore the office, making sure they feel at home with us.
